You will find photographic displays below of the islands, including the "Capital City" of the State of Hawaii , which is Honolulu. The different islands photographed are Oahu, Maui, the "big island" of Hawaii, Kauai and Molokai. Other Islands will be photographed and added at later dates.

The Hawaiian Islands are an archipelago that include 6,425 square miles (16,640 square kilometers) of land that consist of 8 large islands and 124 smaller islands, reefs, and shoals. The 8 larger main islands are Hawaii, Maui, Lanai, Molokai, Oahu, Kahoolawe, Kauai, and Niihau. The State of Hawaii is one of the smallest States in the United States of America. It is ranked 47th in size compared to all 50 states. Larger in land area only to Rhode Island, Connecticut, and Delaware.

There are "other islands" very much connected to the "Hawaiian Islands". They are referred to as the "Northwestern Hawaiian Islands". They stretch for well over 1,000 miles toward the north Pacific Ocean beyond Kauai and Niihau. You have Nihoa about 130 miles beyond Niihau and then you have Necker island about 180 miles beyond Nihoa Island. All of the Hawaiian Islands were formed by many volcanic eruptions. The eruptions continue today on the "big island" of Hawaii.

The "Hawaiian" names for some of the "Northwestern Hawaiian Islands" are listed below.

Necker Island: Mokumanamana
French Frigate Shoals: Mokupapapa
Gardner Pinnacles: Puhahonu
Maro Reef: Nalukakala
Laysan Island: Kauo
Lisianski Island: Papaapoho
Pearl and Hermes Atoll: Holoikauaua
Midway Atoll: Pihemanu
Kure Atoll: Kanemiloha

The Northwestern Hawaiian Islands are all within a federal wildlife refuge established in 1909 to protect the large colonies of seabirds and a variety of marine organisms, including sea turtles and the critically endangered Hawaiian monk seal.

Discover Hawaii, the people, the music, song and dance of the ancient hula, the flowers, and the mountains mist that share the rainbows of aloha !
